“Motif description is a symbol system which notates the outline of movement. It records the structure of movements, but not movements in detail.”

It was developed by V. Preston-Dunlop and is based on Labanotation. It is meant as an intermediary step before moving on to full Labanotation.

Thumber

Thumber is a neat little application for the mac which allows you to create a single image from a movie. It allows you to view the pace, color scheme and structure of a movie in a single glance. Below is the movie ‘Rhythmus 21′ by Hans Richter (1923) after Thumber did it’s work. The second is from an early motion study of the Vector project.

The only downside is that the interval can not be smaller than 1 second, which is in some cases not short enough… I’m working on an application which should sort that out and handle up to 1 frame intervals, ideal for short abstract films.

Non-Linear Live Sequencer

User interface of a non-linear live sequencer. The individual layers are track loops. On each track, events can be set spanning 6 octaves (2 visible). The speed (120 bpm) and rythm (4/4) can be set individually for each track. The track loops are placed in the right playing order by connecting lines, or they can be manipulated live from the console (center square). Effects such as delay and echo are dragged directly on to the appropriate patch lines.

Cornelius Cardew

Cornelius Cardew was an avant-garde composer whose most famous score is ‘Treatise’. The unconventinal representation of music is a graphically stunning work which might as well be the storyboard for a visual music piece. It breathes movement and music simultaneously.
